General Description:

The Eurotech "Rugged VDS" is a standardized high performance telematics system platform designed for demanding mobile and vehicle installations. It combines a powerful embedded PC with advanced connctivity such as Gigabit Ethernet, cellular wireless, USB 2.0 and IEEE-1394b as well as a CAN-bus interface for vehicle I/O.

System expansion and reconfiguration is easy due to the completely modular internal architecture and construction, that bases on standard PC/104 and PC/104Plus board level products. The "Rugged VDS" combines wireless cellular communication over GSM/GPRS/3G, GSM-R or CDMA2000, WLAN and data transfer using Gigabit or 10/100Mbit Ethernet. These communication channels are required in applications such as mobile data servers and access routers.

Modern high speed serial expansion buses such as USB or Firewire are provided for common peripheral device or camera/video integration. Local I/O and sensor expansion is possible using the integrated CAN-bus interface. High performance storage peripherals are supported by the enhanced high current drive USB 2.0 port, that allows for direct connection of external HDD units for mass storage. All Eurotech systems use 20GB high endurance automotive rated extended temperature range HDDs that ensures safe and long-term data storage under all environmental conditions.

All Eurotech systems feature a unique "system monitor" that increases system operating reliability and safety. Internal system operations are controlled by the intelligent system monitor. Temperature and supply voltage monitoring combined with system device management is autonomously handled by the "system monitor" microprocessor. An I2C-bus port is available for external access to the internal monitor bus. Through this I2C-port diagnostics and service tasks can be easily performed, even though the system is powered off.

The "Rugged VDS" meets the requirements of EN50155 standard; extended operating temperature range (-25°C/+70°C) as well as resistance to humidity as well as shocks and vibrations commonly encountered in mobile installations.

To improve the mechanical durability locking circular watertight connectors are used. The WLAN antenna uses a locking R-SMA connector to increase reliability. The back side panel of the system is dedicated for field I/O as well as service and utility I/O that are located under a protective cover. Available for maintainance use are: I2C-bus, VGA output, keyboard and mouse. No fixed system peripheral connectors need to be removed to access the utility I/Os.

There are three different options available for system mass data storage. The mass storage HDD can be internal fixed, removable (over USB2.0) or external (USB2.0 or IEEE-1394b). The Eurotech enhanced USB 2.0 ports are designed to directly power the removable or external high endurance HDD mass storage unit through the USB port. Datarates exceeding 23MBytes/s can be achieved using this technology. The use of a USB 2.0 interface allows for the live removal and insertion of mass storage HDD-units during system operation.
